By using tried and true engineered rail components, Tractive Power’s first product, the TP56 utilizes purpose chosen tier 3 or 4 diesel engines for the specific task. Currently, our prototype TP56 uses a Cat Cert 9 diesel engine that offers 300 – 800 hp. Alternative diesel engines from Cummins, MTU, and John Deere are also possible.
Smaller industrial locomotives currently in use by the rail industry may be better suited but suffer high and expensive maintenance, use older engine technology, polluting and parts are difficult to source; has performance & comfort issues, and may be unable to be serviced in the field. Much of their technology uses construction and equipment ill suited for the demanding heavy workload of a rail yard.
Bigger, older switchers on the other hand, idle all day, spew out gas and oil droplets. They may also incur tax penalties, parts are hard to come by.
Why we exist is to fill a niche in having low maintenance, low life cycle costs and low capital expenditure; it’s robust, and distinguishes itself from its competitors. Our product will also be comparably priced with financing solutions for those who qualify as well as needed product training and support.
